Giving isn’t just a natural principle, it is a command from God. People love surprises and when you do this at odd times, I mean when it isn’t their birthday, christmas or anniversary, the first question you may be faced with is, ‘why?’ But I tell you, it sure shows you are thinking about them even when there is no specific reason to celebrate.
Again, if you are going to visit someone especially a friend you’ve not seen in a long time, it is proper you take something along. Whatever reason you have in mind, I’m sure you can find something to buy from any of the items I listed below.
Most of the gift items I put down today relate to ladies. Forgive me, but majority of my friends are ladies. I hope someone would be able to suggest gift ideas for male friends in the comment section.
You don’t have to go above your budget to do this. It is the heart of the giver and not necessarily the gift that matters. These products can easily be found in supermarkets and stores around you.
Can we get right into this?
1. Beauty and skin products
Ladies, do we ever run out of hair and skin products?
You can pick a few of these products and put them in a clean bag. Supermarkets usually give out fancy bags and if they don’t, you may decide to buy one in the market.
I reside in Ibadan and I’m familiar with few of the supermarkets in my area. You can check out FoodCo and Brent if you live around Apata in Ibadan. There is also Pinnacle for those who stay around Challenge. Shoprite at ring ring is also another place to get great stuff.
You could do a combo of related products. For instance,
Combo for the body: A nice body spray- Hot ice (red) is my favourite, a set of shaving stick or a shaving cream, Oral B toothpaste, dettol, medicated soap, body cream (if you know the type she uses)
Hair combo: hair cream, a set of combs in different sizes, leave-in conditioner, shampoo, moisturiser, hair ruffle…
I love products by Organic because they work well with my hair and as much as I would appreciate products by other brands, I may be skeptical to use just any hair product on my hair. One reason I’ll suggest you have an idea of your friend’s regimen so you don’t buy what she may not be able to use.
With less than 5,000 naira, you can purchase some of these products. Trust me, your friend will not forget this show of love.
There are other things you can get. Baby wipes, cleansing wipes, facial scrub…
2. Children Books
Does your friend have kids? You can take along one or two story books for her children depending on the age of the child.
There are lots of beautifully coloured story books for kids especially those between 4 and 8 years.
The other day, I walked into a bookshop to pick up some books for some kids and I found ‘Ralia the sugar girl’…remember that book? I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it. I read it over 20 years ago and I could still remember some parts of the story. Stories have a way of sticking to the minds of children.
However, as you purchase those books, don’t forget to include some of these;
Chocolates and Biscuits will get them really excited. Remember, if you buy things for your friend’s kids, it’s same as buying something for your friend.
3. A bottle of wine.
This is suitable for a dinner invite or hangout planned by your friend or group of friends.
Sometime ago, my friend and I laughed when we saw bottles of wine sold for 250 naira. What on earth did they pour into that bottle. The bottle was so fine and no one would ever have guessed the price.
As much as we want to cut down on our expenses, it’s better to bring along something that can be trusted. There are also adulterated grape wines sold everywhere. My sister once bought home one fake bottle of wine which she bought at the price of the original wine. It was as if they poured zobo into the bottle. To prevent any form of embarrassment, It is advisable to purchase these products from supermarkets that can be trusted.
4. Active woman perfume.
Some ten years ago, a friend presented this gift to me and since then It has been my best. I know there are more expensive perfumes, but I like this one for its mildness and sweet fragrance. It’s a beautiful gift many ladies will appreciate. There is also the Active Man for men but I’m not sure how great that one is. For a little less than 3000 naira, you can get this wonderful perfume. I still can’t bring myself to buy any other type of perfume.
5. A Christian literature.
Reading is still one of the best ways to gain knowledge. If you have a friend who loves to read, you could present a book as a gift. I have some nice book ideas:
1. A woman after God’s own heart by Elizabeth George
2. Power of a praying Woman by Stormie Omartian.
3. How you can be led by the Spirit of God by Kenneth Hagins.
4. This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti (a novel)
5. Secrets of an Irresistible Woman by Mitchell Mckinney Hammond.
6. As the shofar blew by Francine Rivers (a novel)
There are lots of other great books. Walk into any christian book store and you should be able to find a great selection of books.
6. Household groceries.
Imagine walking into your friend’s house and handing her a bag loaded with groceries. If I am the one, I’ll scream for joy.
You don’t have to go looking for a bag of rice and plenty tubers of yam. With less than 5,000 naira, you can get a combination of the following; 2 litre of groundnut oil, tin tomatoes, spaghetti, a pack of semovita, one or two packs of salt and spices (curry, ginger, thyme).
You can decide to get beverages instead- A tin of milo, one or two packs of golden morn, a tin of milk, sugar, butter and a bottle of groundnut.
You can also get items like Harpic, Jik or Hypo, detergent, bar soaps, dettol, sanitary pads, tissue papers. The good thing about these products is that we always need them. They cannot be too much.
This is one gift you can take along especially when you are paying a friend a visit. Water Melon, (this can be stressful if you have to jump buses but if you have your own car, then it’s a good idea.) Apples, oranges, banana, pineapple, depending on the fruit in season. You can pick any of the fruits or a combination of two and hold along.
This is another great gift. They can be found in different markets. You don’t even have to travel to Gbagi in Ibadan or Idumota in Lagos to get them. African prints can be found in almost every market. They range with the prices, quality and length. The designs are too numerous to count. You can go with someone if you have difficult identifying quality materials.
What other gift ideas would you suggest for friends on a budget. Would you mind sharing them with me in the comment section?
