CLICK Journey Series-2

Have you heard people say there is a demon behind pornography and that it is a beast that must be destroyed?

That’s how I’ve always seen it. No thanks to my imaginative ability, I can almost see a monster in the eyes of my mind..

Some have become regular visitors to deliverance houses, others have gone days fasting, praying and crying to God on the issue. I don’t know if it has worked for others that way, but at my end, having a full understanding of biblical principles on this issue has helped me alot. So now, even though I am not ignorant of the devices of the devil, I do not see a monster. I have found a sure way of putting to death, deeds that belong to my earthly nature.

Today, I’m going to try and redirect your mindset. I will not present a giant, ugly-looking demon armed with a club and, ready to sniff life out of you. I’m simply going to present something you are familiar with.

As much as I believe in the spiritual and in the existence of principalities and powers, I’ve chosen to follow the pattern of Christ as regard this issue. Do you know that Christ our Lord used the parts of our body to explain how a believer can overcome this kind of addiction? Read His words.

…The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body shall be full of light….

…If thy eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness…

…if thy right hand offends you, cut it off and cast it from thee. For it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thine whole body be cast into hell…(I’ll explain the message behind this as we proceed in the journey)

Please note: if you do not first have a relationship with Christ, it’s going to be impossible for you to go along with us in this journey. It is Christ who gives the strength and power to be free and to stay free and this can only come by accepting Christ into your life. If you want to receive Christ into your life, you can say this short prayer of salvation.

You can say this simple prayer.

Dear Lord,

I come to you in the name of Jesus. I acknowlegde that I am a sinner. I need your forgiveness. Forgive me of all of my sins. I confess Jesus as my Lord and personal Saviour. I believe in my heart that Jesus died and was raised for me. I thank you for this new life I have received. I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. Amen.

If you’ve just said this prayer, welcome into the family of God.

Please come along with me as we explore an important area in this journey series. I’ll explain this in three points.

1. When you view x-rated images or videos, your eyes pick the images and send what is received to your brain. There is a release of chemicals that pulls you to the neurons.(also known as nerve cells).

These chemicals, for instance, dopamine, help you to feel pleasure. Dopamine also create paths that takes you back to the place where the chemical was first released. This is what counsellors mean when they say ‘triggers’. (We shall deal with triggers in subsequent episodes.) The more you return to the paths already created, the faster your brain will be wired towards an expectancy of that response, whether or not you want it.

2. There is the Mirror Neurons. When you watch sex, it works in your brain to produce sexual arousal and wires it to accept whatever you see in those videos.

For instance, if as a married man, while watching an x-rated video, you discover that the lady moans when the man digs his nails into her shoulder, there is a strong likelihood that you will seek moans by doing same with his wife. This is one of the reason I do not support couples building their sex lives on porn videos, apart from the the fact that your partner merely becomes an object suitable for your sexual release.  There are healthy books, articles and healthy videos that can proffer sexual understanding among couples.

3. A study published by JAMA psychiatrist in 2014 discovered that as you spend more time with porn, your response to sexual stimulation becomes dull. It begins to seek for greater pleasure.

From what I have discovered, dopamine thrives on variety. That’s why a man who begins with just staring at the naked pictures of ladies, becomes dissatisfied after a while, moves to soft porn, isn’t satisfied, searches for xxx videos, loses satisfaction again, and then proceeds to violent or even rape sex

Having laid this bare, it becomes easy to understand the reason behind consistent responses to these impulses.

God placed these chemicals that provide pleasure solely for sex between couples. From the beginning, it was never intended for self gratification.

Pornography is a great promoter of lust and inordinate sexual desires as addressed by Paul. It is a property of the old man that we must address. You know quite well that the carnal mind is enmity with God and through the spirit we are adjured to put to death the things that belong to our old nature.

If you are serious about living this new life of Christ, then you must be determined to replace darkness with light, evil with good, pollution for purity. It starts with knowing and walking in the knowledge of what you have received. Even if you responded to those urges again before reading this, don’t give up. You will be strong. Let’s continue in this journey.

Prayer Guide.

Present your body to the Lord again. Let Him know you are willing to offer your body as a living sacrifice. Speak God’s word to your body again. You have been bought with a price. You are crucified with Christ. You are dead to sin and alive to righteousness.

Mediate on the scriptures below and mutter them continuously.

Romans 12:1, Romans 8:13, Romans 6. I Cor 3:16.

In the next episode I will explain why ‘saying NO’ to pornography actually pulls you to it. Stay blessed.
