I grew up in an assembly where speaking in tongues wasn’t exactly a common spiritual activity. In fact the only time I saw any trace of this was after a teaching on the Holy Spirit during our devotion at home. Dad began to speak in tongues during the prayer session.  I remembered I stopped praying and stared at my father. It was all strange and weird to me.

When I met Christ, I came to realize how important it was for me to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Then it happened in October 2010 after listening to a sermon on the Holy Spirit by Pastor Enoch Adeboye. I remember I knelt by my bed praying and then my tongue twisted and words I didn’t understand flowed out of my mouth. It felt really strange listening to those words I considered gibberish and after a few minutes, I stopped.

Still, it felt like an achievement. I could now boldly tell anyone that I was baptized with the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues. But what I didn’t know about speaking in tongues was that it was supposed to a regular activity, a means of building and edifying my faith. Since I didn’t understand what it fully meant, I just continued serving God and praying my usual way.

Then I listened to a sermon by Bro Gbile Akanni and when he led us in prayers, Bro Gbile began to speak in tongues from the pulpit. I got stirred up again. After that experience, I felt so refreshed and edified in ways I cannot explain. But then as the weeks went by, indiscipline towards spiritual activities crept in and I stopped again.

Until I came face to face with serious struggles, struggles that were endless. My spiritual growth was nothing to write home about, devotion was merely a routine and I wasn’t seeing freshness in my walk with God. There were days I’d cry and wonder why God abandoned me, I remember times when I skipped devotions or merely rush through the verse for the day. I was just a tired, weary Christian.

But things changed for me when I received enlightenment from Jude 1:20. I came to understand that by not regularly engaging in praying in the spirit, I was putting a limit to the depth to which I could build my inner man.

But you beloved, build yourselves up (founded) on your most holy faith (make progress, rise like an edifice higher and higher) praying in the Holy Spirit. Jude 1:20 (AMP)

Dear believer, one powerful way to grow those spiritual muscles is by praying in the Spirit. Forget that people have bastardized the usage of praying in tongues. Of course, that there is a counterfeit does not make the original less potent. You will experience God more than you can ever imagine when you do this consistently.

When someone speaks in tongues, no one understands a word he says, because he’s not speaking to people but to God- he is speaking intimate mysteries in the Spirit..2 Corinthians 14:2 (TPT)

There are days when I lack words to pray in my understanding. There are times when my heart is so burdened and I can’t decipher what exactly us wrong, praying in the Spirit comes in handy for me. Because by doing so, the Holy Spirit helps me to pray according to God’s will.

Read When the Holy Spirit Comes

By praying in tongues, you speak mysteries that your human mind cannot fathom. It is a sure way to  reach into the depths of the Spirit of God.

Receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit is for every believer. You don’t have to pray for weeks and months before accessing it. It is available to you now. The Holy Spirit is not sitting somewhere in heaven saying, ‘Let me see how well she can cry and pray for this.’ You receive this by faith. Yes, you can receive it right now.

Secret to a healthy life

As you pray with an expectant heart to be filled, say whatever flows out from your spirit. Forget that it doesn’t make sense. The truth is, it is not supposed to make sense to your mind. If what you hear in your spirit is ba-ba-ba. It is not your business to say, ‘that doesn’t look like it’s from the Holy Spirit.’ Just say it and gradually as you practice this, you’ll discover that more words flow from the little that has been birthed through you.

Have you received the Holy Ghost since you believed?

Don’t let this week pass by without this baptism. If you are born-again, you can experience this. The Holy Spirit is always ready to pour upon you the fullness of His Spirit. One great way that could help stir this is by getting around believers who engage in this spiritual exercise regularly.

Word would fail me to enumerate the blessings I have received in the place of praying this way. Battles have been won, instructions received, anxiety dispelled, peace increased. I have seen my troubled and noisy mind go so quiet after praying in the spirit such that when I settle to read the word, I’m able to quickly grasp the things of the spirit.

I have received revelation knowledge of certain scriptures that seemed like hard nuts to break. I have become more sensitive to issues that required seeking God’s face.

I have been strengthened, refreshed and re-energized.

I have worshipped in the spirit and found my heart bubbling with joy. You know, those kind of songs birthed in the spirit. Deep. Sweet. Refreshing.

It’s time to build our spiritual walk in the place of praying in the spirit. Don’t wait for the urge to pray, defy your feelings and step into the realm of the spirit. As you pray, there is the possibility that your mind will attempt to wander around. Deliberately pull your mind to stay focused on the prayers in your spirit.

Let’s head to the gym people. Interestingly, the gym is right there in you. You can carry out your exercise anywhere and at anytime. In the bathroom, on your way to work, in the kitchen, with your friends, on your bed, in the bus. Our spiritual muscles need to stay strong and vibrant.

Can we spend a few minutes after reading this to exercise ourselves in this most holy faith?

…But you, beloved, build yourselves up upon your most holy faith (make progress, rise like an edifice higher and higher) praying in the Holy Spirit. Jude 1:20 (AMP)

  • The place of praying in the Spirit in our christian walk cannot be overstated.

Indeed our spiritual muscles need to stay vibrant.

    Thanks for sharing, Dearie.

  • Hmmm.. great piece.
This is one spiritual exercise believers should never skip once it is received. The accompanying peace and edification is beyond words.
GOD help us to be practising Christians.

    • I say Amen to your prayers. Truly the peace and edification that comes via praying in the Spirit is unquantifiable.

  • Your former spiritual state is just the point where I am now😔😔😔

No freshness in my walk with God. Just weary and tired. But I am encouraged to visit the gym now just like I have read in this post.

God bless and increase you on all sides Ma

    • Please visit the gym. You’ll be amazed at the stirrings the Holy Spirit will cause in your heart.

  • I remember I use to be easily connected when I was in school and during my service year, wow, it was so beautiful.
Immediately I got married and got to my present church, connecting is very difficult. I really need a church or gathering of spiritual beings where I can get myself back on track.

    • Talk to God about this. Ask Him to lead you to a place where you can grow. You can also ask him to bring friends who will help your Christian walk.

Another wonderful prayer is to ask Him to lead your hearts to ministers whose sermons you can feed on. With the internet, you can be well fed beyond your local church.

  • Hmmm…thank you so much sister Ife…..

“…my troubled and noisy mind go so quiet after praying in the Holy Ghost…”

    Just what I need…thanks so much…

  • Wow I had similar experience, it was after listening to the same Gbile akanni I confirmed toungs speaking and embraced it. Glory be to God.
